Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has confirmed that running back David Montgomery, who is set to become a free agent, will not return to the team next season. Montgomery’s season was cut short due to a knee injury requiring surgery.
“We’re going to miss him,” Campbell told reporters, acknowledging Montgomery’s contributions to the team’s offense.
Montgomery’s departure leaves a significant gap in the Lions’ backfield. The team will likely look to bolster their running back corps through the draft or free agency in the upcoming offseason.
In addition to Montgomery, defensive lineman Alim McNeill and cornerback Khalil Dorsey have also been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injuries.
As the Lions prepare for the next season, Campbell and his coaching staff face the challenge of reshaping the roster to address these key absences and improve upon this year’s performance.
