Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed today that veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will not be returning to the team for the 2025 NFL season. The announcement comes as Bridgewater has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, dealing with recurring injuries that have hindered his performance and availability.
In an emotional press conference, Campbell praised Bridgewater’s contributions to the team and his resilience in the face of adversity.
“Teddy has been a true professional and a tremendous leader in our locker room,” Campbell said. “It’s heartbreaking because he’s given everything he had, but we’ve had to make a tough decision that’s best for both him and the team moving forward.”
Bridgewater, who joined the Lions in 2023 as a backup quarterback, stepped into the starting role on multiple occasions due to injuries to other players. While he displayed flashes of his trademark poise and skill, his own health issues, including lingering knee and shoulder injuries, limited his ability to provide consistent contributions.
In a statement, Bridgewater expressed gratitude to the Lions organization, his teammates, and fans.
“I’ve been blessed to play this game and to have had the chance to compete for this team,” Bridgewater said. “While this chapter ends here, I’ll always cherish the relationships and memories I’ve made in Detroit.”
With Bridgewater’s departure, the Lions are expected to explore new quarterback options during the offseason, potentially looking to the draft or free agency to fill the void. The move signals a fresh start for both Bridgewater and the Lions as they chart separate paths forward.
