A Sad End to a Promising Career: Matt LaFleur Confirms Injury-Plagued Quarterback Won’t Be Returning Next Season

Green Bay, WI – Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur announced today that veteran quarterback **Kirk Cousins** will not be returning to the team next season. After joining the Packers for what many hoped would be a resurgence in his career, Cousins was sidelined by multiple injuries that proved too significant to overcome.

“This is not the outcome anyone wanted,” LaFleur said in a somber statement. “Kirk gave everything he had to this team, but his health has to come first. He’s been a consummate professional, and we’re incredibly thankful for his contributions.”

Cousins, who was acquired by the Packers in the 2024 offseason after parting ways with the Minnesota Vikings, suffered a devastating Achilles injury early in the season. Despite months of rehabilitation, additional complications with his throwing arm further delayed his return. Doctors ultimately advised against him continuing at a professional level.

The 36-year-old quarterback’s tenure in Green Bay was brief but impactful, as he provided mentorship to younger players and contributed to the team’s early successes before his injury. However, the toll of repeated physical setbacks left the Packers with no choice but to move forward.

“I’ve given my all to this game, and while this isn’t the way I wanted it to end, I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished,” Cousins said in a statement. “I want to thank the Packers organization, my teammates, and the fans for their unwavering support.”

As the Packers look to rebuild their quarterback room for the 2025 season, Cousins’ departure marks the end of an era for one of the NFL’s most consistent and respected signal-callers. Fans and former teammates alike have flooded social media with messages of gratitude and admiration for Cousins’ dedication to the sport.
