A Sad End to a Promising Career: Mike Tomlin Confirms Injury-Plagued Quarterback Won’t Be Returning Next Season

Pittsburgh, PA — In a heartfelt press conference earlier today, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that quarterback Kenny Pickett will not be returning to the team next season, marking a somber end to what many believed was a promising career.

Pickett, who joined the Steelers as a first-round pick in 2022, had shown flashes of brilliance early in his career. However, a series of injuries over the past two seasons derailed his progress, keeping him sidelined for critical stretches. The 2024 season proved to be particularly brutal, with recurring shoulder and knee issues forcing Pickett to miss a significant portion of games and raising concerns about his long-term health.

“It’s tough, no doubt about it,” Tomlin said. “Kenny gave everything he had to this organization, but at some point, we have to make decisions that are best for the team and the individual. His health and well-being come first, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like football will be in his immediate future.”

Pickett released a statement thanking the Steelers organization, his teammates, and fans for their unwavering support. “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had,” Pickett wrote. “While this isn’t how I envisioned things ending, I’m at peace knowing I gave it my all. I’ll cherish the relationships and memories I’ve made here forever.”

The announcement leaves the Steelers facing an uncertain future at quarterback, with backup Mitch Trubisky and rookie prospect Malik Reed expected to compete for the starting role in the 2025 season. Analysts speculate that the Steelers may also explore options in free agency or the NFL draft to solidify the position.

Fans and teammates have taken to social media to express their admiration for Pickett and their sadness over his departure. “You’ve got nothing but love from us, KP,” star wide receiver George Pickens tweeted. “Proud to have shared the field with you.”

As the Steelers move forward, the shadow of what could have been with Pickett remains a poignant reminder of how unpredictable and unforgiving the sport can be.
