A Strategic Exit: The Truth Behind Cleveland’s Latest Coaching Decision

After parting ways with the Tennessee Titans last year, former head coach Mike Vrabel spent much of the offseason searching for his next opportunity. Despite his success, including being named the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year, Vrabel remained unemployed for the first time since 2011.

The Cleveland Browns stepped in, offering Vrabel a consulting role in March 2024, giving the Ohio native a chance to stay involved in the NFL. Over time, Vrabel took on more active responsibilities with the team, moving beyond his initial advisory position.

Vrabel’s contract with the Browns officially ended on Monday, which some view as a favor to the coach. Head coach Kevin Stefanski highlighted this during a recent media session, explaining that the team adjusted Vrabel’s contract to allow him an early start in pursuing head coaching interviews.

“Part of adjusting Mike Vrabel’s contract was letting him get a head start on some of these interviews,” Stefanski said, according to insider Mary Kay Cabot. “I think a team will be lucky to have him.”

Currently, there are three head coaching vacancies in the NFL, with the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets having parted ways with their coaches during the 2024 season. More openings are expected to arise as teams finalize their regular-season evaluations.

Vrabel is reportedly a top candidate for several teams, making him a prominent figure in the 2025 NFL coaching carousel.
