The Green Bay Packers are facing significant injury concerns as they prepare for their Week 18 game against the Chicago Bears. Despite hopes of improved health following their loss to the Minnesota Vikings, several key players remain sidelined, raising worries about the team’s depth and readiness for the postseason.
Five players who missed the Vikings game—wide receiver Christian Watson (knee), cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee), linebacker Quay Walker (ankle), safety Evan Williams (quad), and backup tackle Andre Dillard (concussion)—did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. The injury list expanded with defensive end Brenton Cox Jr. (foot) and safety Zayne Anderson (concussion) also not practicing. Anderson had started in place of Williams but was injured early against Minnesota.
If these players remain out, it could severely impact the defense. In such a case, Eric Wilson may again start at middle linebacker for Walker, while rookie Javon Bullard could move from the slot to safety. This shift would leave Keisean Nixon as the nickel cornerback, with Carrington Valentine and Eric Stokes filling in as outside cornerbacks in nickel packages. The weakened middle of the defense could be vulnerable, as seen in last week’s loss to the Vikings, and might pose challenges against the Bears.
On a positive note, defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt, who was evaluated for a concussion during the Vikings game, returned to practice fully. Left guard Elgton Jenkins, though limited, was also part of practice as part of his usual rest schedule.
Head coach Matt LaFleur emphasized the importance of playing starters against the Bears, noting that the team has little choice due to the mounting injuries. He reflected on past experiences where such decisions were pivotal, stressing that the right approach depends on what works best for the team.
