Bears Set to Steal Lions’ Top Backup in $2.5M Blockbuster Offseason Move!”

The Detroit Lions’ offense has been a powerhouse in 2024, leading the NFL in points per game (33.3) and ranking second in yards per game (410.5). While much of the credit goes to quarterback Jared Goff, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and the team’s skill players, the offensive line has been a dominant force, anchoring the success.

In addition to the Lions’ elite starting five on the offensive line, backup Dan Skipper has been a crucial contributor. Skipper, who started five games this season, often serves as an extra lineman, enhancing Detroit’s rushing attack. However, his tenure in Detroit may be coming to an end.

According to Isaac Zuniga of *Last Word on Sports*, Skipper is expected to leave the Lions this offseason and sign a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Chicago Bears. Zuniga also predicts that the Bears will bolster their offensive line by adding Atlanta Falcons center Drew Dalman, Philadelphia Eagles guard Mekhi Becton, and Miami Dolphins guard Robert Jones. Additionally, he speculates that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson could become the Bears’ next head coach.

Zuniga writes, “It’s unlikely Bears GM Ryan Poles will spend heavily on multiple offensive line starters. Instead, Ben Johnson might bring in a familiar face like Dan Skipper for added depth.”

Skipper, a versatile 30-year-old lineman, would provide valuable depth for Chicago, potentially serving as the sixth offensive lineman in a similar role to his time in Detroit. This season, Skipper has proven his reliability at left tackle, allowing just one sack and 11 quarterback pressures over 135 pass-blocking snaps, earning a 61.0 PFF pass-blocking grade.

While the Lions will likely attempt to retain Skipper—given his importance to their offensive line and his respected presence in the locker room—he could find a compelling opportunity with the Bears if he departs. For Chicago, Skipper’s experience and versatility would make him a strong addition to their revamped offensive line.
