The Detroit Lions face the possibility of losing another key coach this offseason. In addition to defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, offensive line coach Hank Fraley is now drawing interest for a prominent NFL job.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Fraley is scheduled to interview for the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator role on Friday. The Seahawks are looking for a replacement after parting ways with Ryan Grubb following a single season in the position.
Fraley has been with the Lions since 2018, initially hired as an assistant offensive line coach before being promoted to offensive line coach in 2020. Under his leadership, Detroit has developed one of the league’s top offensive lines, and Fraley has played a significant role in the growth of standout tackle Penei Sewell, the No. 7 overall pick in 2021.
Before joining the Lions, Fraley had an 11-year NFL playing career and began coaching at the college level, serving as the offensive line coach for San Diego State and San Jose State. He later worked with the Minnesota Vikings as an assistant offensive line coach from 2014 to 2016 and then spent time at UCLA before arriving in Detroit.
The Lions could attempt to retain Fraley by offering him their offensive coordinator role, which is likely to open if Johnson secures a head coaching position. However, head coach Dan Campbell may also consider running backs coach Scottie Montgomery for the job. Campbell has expressed high regard for Montgomery, calling him a future head coach candidate.
The growing interest in Lions coaches highlights the strength of Campbell’s staff. Reflecting on his team and staff, Campbell acknowledged the unique bond they’ve built. “This is a special team and a special staff, and it’s been that way since the beginning. When it’s over, it’s over, but we’re going to make the most of it until that time comes,” he said, as quoted by The Athletic.
Both Johnson and Glenn are also set to interview for other positions this week, with the Lions granting them a window from Thursday to Saturday to explore opportunities.
