Mystery Signing: Chargers Sign Steelers WR in Bold Move

The Los Angeles Chargers have officially signed former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick to a reserve/futures contract following their elimination in the AFC Wild Card round. Fitzpatrick, who had spent most of the season on the Chargers’ practice squad, now has an opportunity to develop further within the organization as they prepare for the 2025 season.

Fitzpatrick’s Time with the Steelers

Fitzpatrick previously joined the Steelers in 2022 on a reserve/futures deal. During his time in Pittsburgh, he made a brief appearance on the active roster, playing in one game during the 2023 season. That appearance came in Week 4 against the Houston Texans, where Fitzpatrick played just three special teams snaps during the Steelers’ 30-6 loss. He did not record any statistics during his stint with Pittsburgh.

Early NFL Career with the Titans
The 25-year-old wideout initially entered the league as a fourth-round pick (109th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected by the Tennessee Titans out of Louisville. Fitzpatrick had a limited role in Tennessee, appearing in seven total games. His most productive stretch came during Weeks 10-12 of the 2021 season, where he recorded stats in three games. In Week 11 against the Houston Texans, Fitzpatrick logged the highlight of his NFL career to date—a three-catch, 35-yard performance that included his first and only career touchdown in a 22-13 loss.

 College Career at Louisville
Fitzpatrick’s college career at Louisville was marked by steady production and the ability to contribute to a high-powered offense. Over his time with the Cardinals, he amassed 2,589 receiving yards. His standout freshman season in 2017 saw him catch nine touchdown passes, the second most in the ACC that year, trailing only Florida State’s Auden Tate. Notably, Fitzpatrick played alongside two future NFL quarterbacks in Lamar Jackson and Malik Cunningham during his college years, helping him hone his skills against top competition.

 What’s Next for Fitzpatrick?
By signing a reserve/futures contract, Fitzpatrick will remain with the Chargers in a developmental capacity as the team evaluates his potential ahead of the 2025 season. However, the window to establish himself as a reliable NFL player is narrowing. At 25 years old, Fitzpatrick faces increased pressure to make the most of his opportunities and prove he can be a consistent contributor in the league.

For now, the Chargers appear willing to invest in Fitzpatrick’s potential, but his path forward will likely depend on his ability to make an impression during offseason workouts and training camp.
