Deontae Lawson Blames Alabama’s Shocking Loss to Vanderbilt on One Major Mistake”

In a recent interview with Roger Hoover on the Crimson Tide Sports Network, Alabama linebacker Deontae Lawson reflected on the team’s stunning 40-35 loss to Vanderbilt, one of the most surprising upsets of the 2024 college football season. The defeat came just a week after Alabama secured an impressive victory over Georgia, which ultimately became the highlight of their season.

Lawson admitted that the team’s lack of focus and intensity during practice in the lead-up to the Vanderbilt game played a significant role in their underwhelming performance. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of preparation throughout the week, noting that the team didn’t approach practices with the same urgency and commitment they showed prior to the Georgia game.

“I don’t think we brought the same level of intensity to practice as we did before Georgia,” Lawson said. “That preparation and focus during the week is what matters most. It’s not just about showing up on Saturday—it’s about attacking the preparation leading up to the game. When everyone embraces that mindset, the game itself becomes much easier. Once we all buy into that approach, we’ll be in a much better place.”

Looking ahead to their second year under head coach Kalen DeBoer, Alabama aims to bring a more consistent effort to their preparation and build on the lessons learned from their up-and-down 2024 season.
