The NCAA has launched an investigation into an alleged physical altercation involving Kentucky head coach Mark Pope during the Wildcats’ heated 74-61 loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday night.
According to multiple eyewitness reports, the incident occurred late in the second half near Kentucky’s bench when tensions were running high. Video footage circulating on social media appears to show an Arkansas staff member or player making contact with Pope during a chaotic moment in the game. While the details remain unclear, some reports suggest a shove or aggressive confrontation may have taken place.
Pope, in his postgame press conference, declined to comment directly on the incident but hinted at some **”unacceptable behavior” during the game.
“I’m not here to make excuses, but there were some things that happened tonight that shouldn’t be part of college basketball,” Pope said.
The NCAA and SEC officials have confirmed they are reviewing the footage and gathering statements from both teams. Kentucky’s athletic department released a statement Sunday morning, expressing concern over the situation and calling for a thorough investigation.
“Coach Pope’s safety and the integrity of the game are our top priorities. We expect a fair and complete review of what took place last night,” the statement read.
Arkansas head coach Eric Musselman dismissed the allegations in his press conference, calling them “overblown.”
“It was an intense game, emotions ran high, but I don’t believe anything serious happened. We respect Coach Pope and Kentucky, and we’ll cooperate fully with any review,” Musselman said.
With the SEC Tournament approaching, this controversy adds another layer of drama to what has already been a heated rivalry. The NCAA has not set a timeline for its findings, but disciplinary action could follow if wrongdoing is confirmed.
