Fans Are Stunned As Auburn Star Announces Return For senior Season

Auburn basketball is having an outstanding season, with head coach Bruce Pearl leading a team that boasts one of the nation’s top players, forward Johni Broome, who averages 18 points per game. However, another key player, guard Chad Baker-Mazara, has also been a consistent scoring threat for the Tigers. Baker-Mazara, who contributes 13.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, recently hinted at the possibility of returning for another season at Auburn.

On Friday, Baker-Mazara took to X (formerly Twitter) to engage with fans after Pearl mentioned in a press conference that the guard has another year of eligibility remaining. In response, Baker-Mazara posed a question to Auburn supporters, asking how they would feel about him coming back for another season. “What ya think Auburn fam, run it back?” he wrote, sparking excitement among fans.

Auburn has been dominant this season, holding a 27-3 record as they approach their final regular-season game. They are preparing for a major rematch against their in-state rival, Alabama, whom they previously defeated 94-85. The upcoming game presents Auburn with an opportunity to sweep the season series against the Crimson Tide.

Baker-Mazara’s journey to Auburn has been unconventional. Coming out of high school in the class of 2020, he was not ranked as a prospect according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He began his college career at Duquesne, where he played 15 games, starting in 13, and averaged 9.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists during the 2020-2021 season.

After just one year at Duquesne, Baker-Mazara transferred to San Diego State. While he appeared in 31 games, he never secured a starting role and averaged 6.3 points per game. Seeking more playing time, he moved to the junior college (JUCO) level, joining Northwest Florida State College. There, he became the team’s leading scorer with 15.2 points per game, helping his squad achieve an impressive 29-8 record during the 2022-2023 season.

In 2023, Baker-Mazara transferred to Auburn, where he made an immediate impact. During his first season with the Tigers, he averaged 10 points per game while playing in 35 games, including nine starts. Now, in the 2024-2025 season, he has taken on an even larger role, becoming a key contributor to Auburn’s success.

With Auburn currently ranked No. 1, Baker-Mazara and his teammates are gearing up for a highly anticipated matchup against No. 7 Alabama. The game is set to take place on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET, airing on ESPN.
