Pearl’s Take on Selection Sunday and Auburn’s Recent Struggles**
With Auburn losing three of its last four games—including defeats to Alabama, Texas A&M, and now Tennessee—Pearl acknowledged the importance of moving forward. While he was clearly frustrated by the team’s recent performances, he remained optimistic about the NCAA Tournament.
Pearl sarcastically remarked about his excitement for Selection Sunday, when the Tigers will learn their tournament seeding and first-round opponent. His message to the team was clear: it’s time to shift their attention to what’s ahead.
“Let’s get to Sunday, find out where we’re going, find out who we’re playing, and let’s get back to work. I’m looking forward, not back,” Pearl said in his postgame press conference.
Auburn’s NCAA Tournament Seeding Outlook
Despite Auburn’s exit from the SEC Tournament before reaching the championship game, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi still projects the Tigers as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The team’s body of work throughout the regular season remains strong enough to keep them in that top-tier position.
Pearl emphasized how much Auburn’s overall performance this season should factor into the committee’s decision. He also acknowledged that their SEC Tournament performance could influence their final seeding, but he believes Auburn’s résumé speaks for itself.
Pearl Defends Auburn’s No. 1 Seed Credentials
During the press conference, Pearl reinforced his belief that Auburn has done enough to be the NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 overall seed. He explained that achieving this honor would signify that his team had the best performance from November through March, something he feels Auburn has demonstrated.
“To me, this is one of the things I’ve talked to the team about: If you’re the No. 1 overall seed, then basically you had the best regular season from November all the way to March,” Pearl said. “We’d love to be able to hold onto that. We’ll find out Sunday.”
Pearl further highlighted the strength of Auburn’s season, arguing that their résumé is one of the best in college basketball history, particularly when considering the number of Quad I wins they have accumulated.
“I believe that this team has, from start to finish, done enough to be the No. 1 overall seed in this tournament,” Pearl stated. “Our résumé is historically one of the strongest résumés in the history of college basketball with the number of Quad I wins we’ve had.”

Although the loss to Tennessee was disappointing, Pearl remains confident in his team’s ability to compete at the highest level. Now, Auburn turns its focus to the NCAA Tournament, where they will have the opportunity to prove their dominance on the national stage.
