Mark Pope gives fans best possible injury update ahead of NCAA tournament

Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope has delivered encouraging news regarding senior guard Lamont Butler’s availability for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Butler, who re-injured his shoulder during the Wildcats’ SEC Tournament victory over Oklahoma, was sidelined for the subsequent game against Alabama. Despite concerns over his recurring shoulder issues, Pope confirmed that Butler will be ready to play in Kentucky’s first NCAA Tournament matchup.

Butler has been a pivotal player for Kentucky this season, averaging 11.5 points and 4.3 assists per game. His return is expected to bolster the Wildcats’ backcourt, especially in light of other injuries affecting the team. Graduate point guard Kerr Kriisa is recovering from a season-ending foot injury sustained in December, and guard Jaxson Robinson is out for the season following wrist surgery.

Pope expressed optimism about Butler’s readiness, stating, “The plan is for him to play, for sure.” He acknowledged the team’s challenges with injuries this season but emphasized Butler’s experience and leadership as vital assets for their tournament run.

Kentucky, seeded No. 3 in the Midwest Region, is set to face the 14th-seeded Troy Trojans in their opening game on Friday, March 21. With Butler back in action, the Wildcats aim to make a deep run in the tournament.
