American ski legend Lindsey Vonn has announced her return to competitive skiing after a nearly six-year retirement, following a successful partial knee replacement surgery in April 2024. The 40-year-old athlete expressed optimism about her comeback, stating, “I know it seems like I’m far away, but I’m actually really freaking close for only having run a few days of training after basically six years.”
Vonn made her return on December 7, 2024, at the FIS Fall Festival at Copper Mountain, Colorado, finishing 24th out of 45 skiers in a downhill race. She continued her comeback with a 14th place finish in the Super-G at the World Cup in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on December 21, 2024. In her first World Cup downhill race after returning, she achieved a sixth-place finish on January 11, 2025, in St. Anton, followed by a fourth-place finish in the Super-G the next day.
Reflecting on her return, Vonn emphasized her personal motivation: “I’m doing this 100% for myself. I’m having a blast… I’m just living my life, not doing it for anyone but myself.”
Vonn’s comeback has been met with enthusiasm from fans and fellow athletes, who admire her resilience and dedication to the sport.
