A recent decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unexpectedly forced alpine skiing stars Mikaela Shiffrin and her fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde to keep their distance during the ongoing Winter Olympics. The couple, both strong medal contenders in their respective events, are facing new regulations introduced by the IOC that aim to tighten athlete movement and housing policies in Olympic Villages.

The new rules—part of a broader strategy to maintain focus and fairness during the competition—stipulate stricter separation of national teams, limiting interactions even between athletes who are engaged or married but represent different countries. Shiffrin competes for the United States, while Kilde represents Norway.

“It’s tough,” Shiffrin said in a brief press conference. “Of course, we support each other 100%, but these are the Olympics. We respect the rules, even when they come with personal sacrifices.”

Kilde echoed the sentiment, noting, “We’re here to compete at the highest level, and we both know what’s at stake. We’ll be cheering for each other, just from a distance this time.”

While the decision has drawn mixed reactions from fans and fellow athletes, the IOC maintains the changes are intended to ensure streamlined logistics, enhance national team unity, and minimize distractions.

Despite the distance, both Shiffrin and Kilde remain focused, with their eyes firmly set on the podium. Their bond, tested by competition and circumstance, continues to inspire fans worldwide.
