A former standout college athlete tragically lost his life in a skiing accident over the weekend, authorities confirmed Sunday.
25-year-old Michael Thompson, a former wide receiver for the University of Michigan, was skiing with friends at the Aspen Highlands resort when the accident occurred on Saturday afternoon. According to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Thompson veered off a marked trail and collided with a tree in a heavily wooded area. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene within minutes, but despite efforts to revive him, Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries.
Thompson, originally from Chicago, was widely recognized for his athleticism and leadership during his time at the university. Friends, family, and former teammates have taken to social media to express their grief, describing him as “a fierce competitor, loyal friend, and inspiring role model.”
The University of Michigan released a statement mourning the loss, calling Thompson “a beloved member of our Wolverine family whose impact will never be forgotten.”
An investigation is ongoing, but authorities have indicated that weather and snow conditions may have been a factor in the accident.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
