A local skier from Banff is being hailed as an inspiration after making a remarkable recovery from a life-threatening ski accident that nearly ended both his career and his mobility.
Twenty-six-year-old Daniel Mercer, a seasoned backcountry skier known among the Bow Valley community, suffered a devastating fall last season while navigating a steep off-piste section near Sunshine Village. The accident resulted in multiple fractures, a punctured lung, and a traumatic brain injury, leaving doctors unsure if he would ever walk again—let alone return to the slopes.
But just over a year later, Mercer is not only walking—he’s skiing again.
“It’s nothing short of a miracle,” said Dr. Lindsay Rowe, the orthopedic surgeon who treated him at Calgary Foothills Medical Centre. “His physical and mental determination played a huge role in his recovery.”
Mercer’s comeback began with months of intensive rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, cognitive therapy, and strength training. He credits his support system—family, friends, and the Banff ski community—for motivating him through the toughest moments.
This past weekend, Mercer made his return to the same slope where his accident occurred, accompanied by a group of fellow skiers and medical staff who supported his journey.
“I was scared, but I needed to do it,” Mercer said, smiling. “This was never just about skiing again—it was about proving to myself that I could rise after the fall.”
Mercer now plans to advocate for backcountry safety and will be launching a nonprofit to support injured athletes later this year.
