A promising college athlete lost their life on Tuesday following a tragic accident at one of Aspen’s most challenging ski trails, authorities confirmed.
20-year-old James Carter, a junior at Western State University and a standout member of the university’s track and field team, was skiing with friends during spring break when he reportedly lost control on the resort’s black diamond trail, known for its steep terrain and sharp turns.
Resort officials say ski patrol was alerted around 11:45 a.m. and responded within minutes. Despite their efforts, Carter had sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Aspen Valley Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
“James was an exceptional athlete and an even better person,” said Coach Tara Mitchell. “This is an unimaginable loss for our team and the entire university community.”
An investigation is underway, but officials believe speed and difficult trail conditions may have contributed to the accident. Carter was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time.
Western State University has announced grief counseling services for students and plans to hold a memorial on campus later this week.
“Our hearts go out to James’ family, friends, and teammates,” the university said in a statement. “His legacy as a leader, student, and athlete will never be forgotten.”
