In a shocking development in the world of competitive skiing, Austrian skier Matteo Grünwald has been handed a lifetime ban after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The 27-year-old, a rising star in the European circuit with a string of recent podium finishes, was flagged during a routine anti-doping check following the Alpine Continental Cup held in Switzerland last month.
The International Ski Federation (FIS) confirmed the banned substance as GW501516, a metabolic modulator previously linked to several high-profile doping scandals in endurance sports. Grünwald has denied any intentional wrongdoing, stating he is “devastated” and plans to appeal the decision.
“This is a heartbreaking moment,” said FIS spokesperson Helena Drexler. “Grünwald was an inspiration to many young athletes, and such cases damage the integrity of the sport.”
Grünwald’s coach and team have also come under scrutiny, though no additional sanctions have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing.
