In a heartfelt and unexpected announcement, Kentucky basketball legend DeMarcus Cousins has officially declared his retirement from professional basketball—just days after making a brief comeback from injury that had fans hopeful for one final run.
The 34-year-old former Wildcat made the emotional revelation via a social media post early Sunday morning, writing: “It’s time. After years of highs, lows, and unforgettable moments, I’m stepping away from the game I’ve given everything to.”
Cousins, who played one of the most dominant freshman seasons in Kentucky history under Coach John Calipari in 2009-10, had been working tirelessly on a return to the hardwood following a series of injuries that plagued the latter half of his career. Just last week, he made headlines after appearing in a professional game overseas, showing flashes of the power and finesse that once made him a four-time NBA All-Star.
But according to sources close to Cousins, the physical toll and emotional strain of multiple rehabs played a major part in his decision to retire.
“Coming back was a personal victory,” Cousins added in his post. “But I’ve realized my body isn’t responding the way it used to, and that’s okay. I leave the game with no regrets and with gratitude for every moment.”
A dominant force in the paint, Cousins leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his on-court dominance but also by his fierce loyalty to Kentucky basketball and the fans who supported him throughout his career.
Coach Mark Pope responded to the news on X, writing: “Boogie gave everything to this game. He’s one of the most talented big men I’ve ever coached. Proud of the man he’s become and excited to see what he does next.”
Though Cousins says he’s stepping away from playing, he hinted at staying involved with the game in other ways—possibly in coaching, mentorship, or broadcasting.
As the curtain closes on DeMarcus Cousins’ playing career, Kentucky fans will forever remember the passion, intensity, and heart he brought every time he stepped on the court.
