Chamonix, France — A 27-year-old skier has tragically died after falling 50 feet during a powerful avalanche in one of France’s most prestigious ski resorts, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The incident occurred in the popular alpine area of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, where an “exceptional” avalanche swept through the slopes following days of heavy snowfall and unstable weather conditions. Emergency services responded swiftly, but the young man, whose identity has not yet been released, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Witnesses reported seeing a wall of snow tumbling down the mountainside, catching several skiers off guard. The victim was reportedly thrown from a ledge during the sudden surge, leading to a fatal fall.
Local officials have raised the avalanche risk level and issued urgent warnings to skiers and snowboarders, urging them to avoid off-piste areas and follow all safety advisories. The French Alpine Club described the avalanche conditions as “highly volatile and dangerous.”
This tragic incident marks yet another reminder of the unpredictable and perilous nature of alpine sports during unstable snow conditions. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the avalanche and whether any safety protocols were breached.
