A promising college athlete lost their life over the weekend following a tragic skiing accident on one of Aspen’s most challenging trails.
21-year-old James Carter, a junior at Westlake University and a standout track and field athlete, was vacationing with friends during spring break when the incident occurred. According to resort officials, Carter was navigating the “Devil’s Drop” — a double black diamond trail known for its steep descent and unpredictable terrain — when he lost control and collided with a tree.
Ski patrol responded within minutes and administered emergency care before transporting him to Aspen Valley Hospital. Despite efforts to stabilize him, Carter succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
“James was more than an athlete; he was a leader, a friend, and an inspiration to everyone around him,” said Coach Linda Rowe of Westlake University. “This is a heartbreaking loss for our entire community.”
The ski resort has launched an internal review of the incident, although officials state that weather and trail conditions were within normal safety parameters at the time. Carter was reportedly wearing a helmet and standard safety gear.
Students at Westlake University held a candlelight vigil on Monday night, remembering Carter’s athletic achievements and his warm, uplifting spirit.
Investigations are ongoing, and the resort has urged visitors to take extra caution when skiing advanced trails.
