Tragedy struck over the weekend when the CEO of a prominent New York law firm was killed in a freak skiing accident in Vermont.
Jonathan Marks, 52, the chief executive officer of Marks & Keller LLP, was skiing with his family at Stowe Mountain Resort on Saturday afternoon when the incident occurred. According to resort officials, Marks veered off a groomed trail and collided with a tree in a wooded area. He was wearing a helmet at the time, but the impact proved fatal.
Emergency services were dispatched immediately, but Marks was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities described the accident as a “rare and unfortunate event,” emphasizing that conditions on the slopes were otherwise stable.
Marks, a well-known figure in New York’s legal community, had led the firm for over a decade, expanding its presence nationally and earning accolades for his work in corporate litigation. Colleagues and friends described him as a visionary leader and a devoted family man.
“Jonathan was not just a brilliant attorney—he was a mentor and a friend to so many of us,” said Laura Chen, the firm’s managing partner. “His loss leaves a deep void both professionally and personally.”
The firm announced that it would be holding a memorial service later this week. Marks is survived by his wife, Ellen, and their two teenage children.
The ski resort has confirmed it is cooperating fully with the investigation.
