In a significant development that reverberated across the college basketball world, Duke University issued an official statement Tuesday following a major announcement from legendary former head coach Mike Krzyzewski. The Hall of Famer, affectionately known as “Coach K,” revealed plans to rejoin Duke in an advisory role starting this fall.
Krzyzewski, who retired in 2022 after an unprecedented 42-year coaching career at Duke, will now serve as an ambassador and advisor to both the athletics department and the university’s leadership. The announcement was met with widespread support and excitement from the Duke community.
“Coach K’s legacy at Duke is unmatched, and we are thrilled to welcome him back in this new capacity,” said Duke President Vincent Price. “His insight, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence will continue to shape our institution for years to come.”
Jon Scheyer, Krzyzewski’s former assistant and current head coach, also expressed enthusiasm. “Having Coach K back around the program is an honor. His presence will be a tremendous asset to our players, staff, and recruits.”
Krzyzewski emphasized that his new role will not interfere with the basketball program’s day-to-day operations, but rather serve to “enhance Duke’s broader mission of excellence in academics, athletics, and character development.”
Social media was flooded with celebratory messages from alumni, fans, and former players, many of whom credited Krzyzewski with shaping their lives both on and off the court.
As Duke gears up for the upcoming season, the return of Coach K — even in a non-coaching role — is expected to bolster morale and attract renewed national attention to the Blue Devils program.
