Mark Pope Doesn’t Hesitate in Naming Kentucky’s NCAA Greatest Player

New Kentucky head coach Mark Pope made headlines this week when he confidently named his pick for the greatest player in Kentucky Wildcats NCAA history — and he didn’t hesitate for a second.

In a recent interview, Pope, a former UK player himself and a national champion in 1996, praised the legacy of the program and quickly pointed to Anthony Davis as the greatest to ever don the blue and white.

“Anthony Davis changed the game,” Pope said. “What he accomplished in just one season — the defense, the dominance, the title — it’s unmatched. He left an indelible mark on this program and the sport.”

Davis led Kentucky to a national championship in 2012, collecting numerous accolades along the way, including National Player of the Year and the Final Four Most Outstanding Player. Despite only playing one collegiate season, his impact remains a benchmark for greatness at Kentucky.

Pope’s pick has sparked debate among fans, with names like Dan Issel, Jamal Mashburn, and Tyler Ulis also being floated in discussions. But Pope remains firm, emphasizing that Davis’ influence on both ends of the court set him apart.

As Pope begins his new era at the helm of Kentucky basketball, his deep reverence for the program’s history is evident — and so is his clear vision of greatness.
