The University of Kentucky basketball program finds itself at the center of off-court controversy as star point guard Jalen Brooks faces legal action over a child support dispute. According to court documents filed Monday, Brooks’ estranged partner, Marissa Coleman, is suing for increased monthly child allowance, claiming the rising athlete has failed to meet his financial responsibilities since securing multiple NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals.
Coleman alleges that despite Brooks’ recent endorsements with major brands totaling over $500,000, she has received “minimal and inconsistent support” for their 2-year-old son. “He’s living like a celebrity while our child’s needs are being sidelined,” she stated in a filing with Fayette County Family Court.
Brooks, a projected first-round NBA draft pick, has yet to issue a public statement. However, his attorney claims the allegations are “grossly exaggerated” and that Brooks has “fulfilled all lawful obligations.”
The University of Kentucky has declined to comment, citing student privacy, but sources within the program say the coaching staff is monitoring the situation closely as it could impact the team’s offseason dynamic.
Legal experts believe the case could set a precedent for how NIL earnings factor into college athletes’ personal financial responsibilities.
