“The Feelings Still Haunt Me”: Mark Pope Opens Up on the pain of Losing Kentuckys fast rising star to Ole Miss

In a moment of raw honesty, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has spoken out about the emotional toll of losing homegrown talent Travis Perry to conference rival Ole Miss. The freshman guard, widely regarded as one of Kentucky’s most promising prospects, shocked fans earlier this offseason by entering the transfer portal and ultimately committing to the Rebels.

“The feelings still haunt me,” Pope said when reflecting on Perry’s departure. “You don’t just lose a player — you lose a relationship, a future you were building together. Travis is a special young man, and it’s hard to see him go.”

Perry, a native of Eddyville, Kentucky, made history in high school as the state’s all-time leading scorer and carried immense expectations into his college career. Though his role was limited in his freshman year at Kentucky, many believed he had a breakout season ahead under Pope’s new system.

His decision to transfer to Ole Miss — a team that had recruited him heavily out of high school — has intensified the rivalry between the two programs. While Pope expressed personal disappointment, he also conveyed admiration and support for Perry.

“I enjoyed every moment coaching Travis. I believe in his talent, and I know he’s going to be a star wherever he plays,” Pope added. “But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t sting — especially knowing we’ll be seeing him in an opposing jersey.”

As the SEC season approaches, all eyes will be on the inevitable Kentucky vs. Ole Miss showdown — a matchup now carrying emotional weight far beyond the scoreboard.
