The University of Kentucky Wildcats find themselves embroiled in controversy as starting guard Marcus Holloway is reportedly under investigation by the NCAA for alleged involvement in sports betting activities. Sources close to the program confirmed that the NCAA opened a formal inquiry earlier this month after receiving information suggesting Holloway may have violated the league’s strict gambling regulations.
Holloway, a junior and one of the team’s top performers this season, has not appeared in the Wildcats’ last two games, with the university citing “personal reasons” for his absence. However, insiders now say his benching may be directly related to the ongoing investigation.
In a brief statement Monday morning, Kentucky’s Athletic Director Laura Thompson said, “We are aware of the NCAA’s investigation and are fully cooperating. While we cannot comment further at this time, we remain committed to maintaining the integrity of our program and upholding NCAA standards.”
If the allegations are substantiated, Holloway could face suspension or possible expulsion from NCAA competition. The Wildcats, currently ranked No. 6 nationally, are nearing postseason play, and the absence of their star guard could significantly impact their championship hopes.
Betting scandals have increasingly come under scrutiny as legalized sports wagering expands across the U.S., prompting the NCAA and universities to tighten enforcement measures.
Holloway and his representatives have yet to comment publicly.
The investigation is ongoing.
