Former Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope has finally shed light on his next move following the conclusion of his tenure at the helm of one of college basketball’s most storied programs.
In a candid interview on Wednesday, Pope expressed both gratitude for his time with the Wildcats and excitement for the future. “Coaching at Kentucky has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I’ve learned, grown, and cherished every moment,” Pope said. “But now, it’s time for a new chapter—one that aligns more closely with my personal goals and long-term vision.”
Pope revealed that he will be stepping away from collegiate coaching—for now—to focus on launching a player development academy aimed at mentoring young athletes across the country. The new venture, which will be headquartered in Salt Lake City, will focus on both on-court skills and off-court personal development.
“I want to pour into the next generation,” Pope explained. “There’s more to being a great athlete than just winning games. It’s about leadership, character, and preparation for life after basketball.”
While Pope didn’t rule out a return to coaching in the future—either in the NCAA or even the NBA—he emphasized his desire to make a broader impact. “This isn’t goodbye to basketball. It’s just a shift in focus.”
Fans and players alike have shown an outpouring of support for Pope’s decision, with many praising his dedication to the sport and his forward-thinking approach.
Pope concluded the interview with a message to the Big Blue Nation: “Thank you for believing in me. I will always bleed blue.”
Mark Pope took over the Kentucky Wildcats program with high expectations and brought energy and intensity to the court. His tenure was marked by both challenges and memorable moments, and his leadership helped shape a new era for the Wildcats. His next steps, though different, seem poised to leave an equally lasting impact.
