Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has offered words of wisdom to one of the most talked-about names in the 2025 NBA Draft: Otega Oweh. The Kentucky standout, often labeled this year’s “big winner” following his rapid rise up draft boards, has drawn admiration not only for his athleticism and defensive grit but now for the guidance he’s receiving from seasoned mentors.
Pope, who has coached and mentored NBA-bound players throughout his career, shared candid advice with Oweh during a pre-draft interview session. “Stay grounded. This moment is big, but it’s just the beginning,” Pope said. “Teams love your energy and defense, but what will make you last in the league is discipline, work ethic, and humility.”
The advice didn’t go unnoticed. ESPN analyst Jay Bilas praised both Pope and Oweh during a segment Monday morning. “What I like about this situation is that Oweh isn’t just being hyped—he’s being coached. Pope’s message is exactly what young stars need to hear,” Bilas noted. “And Oweh seems to be the kind of player who listens.”
