The Kentucky Wildcats have made a triumphant return to ESPN’s Top 25 college basketball rankings following a series of crucial NBA Draft decisions that shifted the program’s outlook for the upcoming season. Most notably, senior guard Otega Oweh announced he would withdraw from the 2025 NBA Draft and return to Lexington — a move that has energized the fanbase and raised expectations.
Oweh, who transferred from Oklahoma, was a standout last season, averaging 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. His strong shooting percentages — 49.2% from the field and 35.5% from beyond the arc — made him a potential draft pick, with Sports Illustrated’s Draft Digest projecting him at No. 58 overall. However, with a first-round selection uncertain, Oweh made the call to return and help lead Kentucky on a championship push.
Head coach Mark Pope, entering his first season at the helm of the Wildcats, praised Oweh’s maturity and competitive drive. “Otega’s leadership and presence will be invaluable. He’s returning with a mission,” Pope said in a statement following the announcement.
Speaking to media, Oweh didn’t shy away from bold expectations: “We have the talent to be the No. 1 team in the country,” he said, citing the strength of the returning core and incoming transfers.
Kentucky’s rise in the rankings is also thanks to a deep roster that features five players listed in ESPN’s Top 100 NBA Draft Prospects:
Koby Brea (No. 48)
Amari Williams (No. 60)
Jaxson Robinson (No. 72)
Lamont Butler (No. 94)
Andrew Carr (No. 100)
With such a talented and experienced group, the Wildcats are now viewed as one of the most well-rounded teams in the nation. The blend of veteran returners, new additions, and a renewed coaching philosophy has fans hopeful for a deep NCAA tournament run — and potentially a shot at Kentucky’s ninth national title.
After a few turbulent seasons, this new-look Kentucky squad appears ready to re-establish itself as a college basketball powerhouse. Their entry into the Top 25 may be just the beginning.
