Kentucky Wildcats Dealt Unfortunate Transfer Portal Blow on Tuesday Morning

The Kentucky Wildcats basketball program was hit with more tough news Tuesday morning as freshman forward Jordan Burks officially entered the NCAA transfer portal. Burks’ exit is especially significant, as it leaves Kentucky without a single returning scholarship player from last season — a rare and jarring reality for one of college basketball’s most storied programs.

Burks was seen as a high-upside prospect expected to play a bigger role in the upcoming season under new head coach Mark Pope. His departure follows a wave of roster turnover that has included Reed Sheppard declaring for the NBA Draft and Zvonimir Ivišić transferring to Arkansas, among others.

Despite the exodus, Coach Pope has aggressively attacked the portal himself, landing several impact transfers, including Koby Brea (Dayton), Otega Oweh (Oklahoma), and Lamont Butler (San Diego State). Even so, the loss of Burks stings, as he was one of the last homegrown pieces of continuity in a program now defined by rapid change.

The Wildcats will need their new-look roster to gel quickly this summer as they aim to restore national relevance in the 2025–26 season. For now, though, Tuesday’s news adds another chapter to a turbulent offseason in Lexington.
