Kentucky’s Freshman Star, Named AP Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year

In a historic announcement that sent shockwaves through the college basketball world, Kentucky Wildcats freshman Jalen Rivers has been named the Associated Press (AP) Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year. At just 18 years old, Rivers becomes one of the youngest players ever to receive the prestigious honor.

Rivers, a 6-foot-7 guard from Atlanta, Georgia, dazzled fans and analysts alike with his electric playstyle, averaging 21.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game during the 2024–25 season. His consistency, leadership, and clutch performances helped lead Kentucky to a 29-4 record and a Final Four appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

“This is a dream come true,” Rivers said during the press conference. “To receive this award as a freshman, especially with the level of talent in college basketball right now, is truly humbling. I want to thank Coach Calipari, my teammates, and Big Blue Nation for believing in me every step of the way.”

Rivers beat out other top contenders such as Duke’s Marcus Bailey and UConn’s Elijah Turner for the award. His combination of scoring ability, court vision, and defensive intensity made him a standout in one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory.

With NBA scouts already projecting him as a top-3 pick in the upcoming draft, Rivers’ future looks as bright as his freshman season was dominant. For now, though, he’s etched his name into the history books of Kentucky basketball—and college basketball at large.
