In a surprising yet strategic move, Otega Oweh has officially withdrawn from the 2025 NBA Draft and announced his return to the Kentucky Wildcats for another season. The decision, which caught many fans and analysts off guard, was largely influenced by a pivotal conversation with Kentucky head coach Mark Pope.
Speaking to reporters earlier today, Oweh opened up about the moment that changed his mind.
“Coach Pope told me, ‘Otega, you’re just scratching the surface of who you can become. Come back, lead this team, and let’s chase a championship together. The league will still be there, but this moment — this legacy — you only get once,'” Oweh recalled.
The message resonated deeply with the young guard, who had been projected as a potential late second-round pick. Instead of entering the draft, Oweh chose to focus on development, team leadership, and a strong college run under Pope’s system.
“It wasn’t just about the NBA anymore,” Oweh added. “It was about growing as a player, being part of something special, and trusting a coach who believes in me more than anyone.”
Coach Mark Pope, who took the reins of the Wildcats program earlier this year, expressed his excitement about Oweh’s return, calling him a “vital piece to what we’re building in Lexington.”
With Oweh back in the lineup, Kentucky fans can expect a more seasoned and determined squad ready to make a deep postseason run.
