Incoming Kentucky Basketball Freshman to Try Out for U.S. National Team as his Arrival in Lexington May Be Delayed

The Kentucky Wildcats may have to wait a little longer to welcome one of their most anticipated recruits.

Five-star freshman Jalen Thompson, a 6-foot-7 forward out of Los Angeles, has been invited to participate in the upcoming tryouts for the USA Basketball U19 National Team. The training camp, which will take place in Colorado Springs later this month, could delay Thompson’s arrival in Lexington as the Wildcats prepare for summer workouts.

Thompson, ranked No. 8 overall in the Class of 2025 by ESPN, is expected to play a key role in John Calipari’s squad this season. Known for his high-flying dunks, elite athleticism, and two-way versatility, Thompson brings a dynamic skill set to a Kentucky roster already brimming with talent.

“We’re incredibly proud of Jalen,” Coach Mark Pope said in a statement. “Representing your country is one of the highest honors in basketball. While we’d love to have him here early, this experience will only make him a better player and leader.”

If selected for the final roster, Thompson would travel with Team USA to compete in the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup, scheduled to be held in July. His participation could push back his full integration into team activities at Kentucky until mid-summer.

Wildcat fans will be watching closely as Thompson competes against the nation’s top talent for a coveted spot on the roster. Regardless of the outcome, Big Blue Nation is already buzzing about the impact he could have in Rupp Arena come fall.
