Kentucky’s Mark Pope Loses Former Four-Star Recruit After Freshman Season

The Kentucky Wildcats have suffered a notable offseason loss as former four-star recruit Jalen Mitchell has announced his decision to transfer after just one season in Lexington. The move comes as head coach Mark Pope continues to shape the program following his first year at the helm.

Mitchell, a 6-foot-6 guard out of Chicago’s Lincoln Prep, arrived at Kentucky as part of the 2024 recruiting class with high expectations. Despite his pedigree, Mitchell saw limited playing time, averaging 5.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 14 minutes per game.

“First off, I want to thank Big Blue Nation for welcoming me with open arms,” Mitchell said in a statement posted to social media. “I’ve grown a lot during my time here, but after talking with my family and coaches, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal and explore opportunities where I can continue to grow on and off the court.”

This marks one of the first significant departures under Pope, who took over following the departure of longtime head coach John Calipari. Though roster changes are expected in the modern college basketball landscape, Mitchell’s exit underscores the challenges Pope faces as he looks to restore Kentucky to championship contention.

With Mitchell’s departure, Kentucky now has added flexibility in its scholarship count heading into the summer transfer market — a space Pope is expected to be active in as he retools the roster for the 2025–26 campaign.
