In a momentous recognition of leadership, resilience, and basketball brilliance, University of Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has been named the 2024 NABC Coach of the Year. This comes after a historic season in which Pope led the Kentucky Wildcats to a staggering 32 wins — the most in program history — and a thrilling run to the NCAA Final Four.
Taking the reins in what many called a transitional period for Kentucky basketball, Pope not only met expectations but shattered them, restoring national dominance to the storied program. Under his leadership, the Wildcats displayed an aggressive yet cohesive style of play, blending high-octane offense with tenacious defense.
“This team came together in ways I could only dream of,” Pope said during a press conference. “Their belief in each other, their relentless work ethic, and the unwavering support from Big Blue Nation made this year unforgettable.”
The Wildcats’ 2024 campaign included notable wins over top-ranked opponents, a perfect home record at Rupp Arena, and a Southeastern Conference (SEC) title. Pope’s ability to develop young talent while fostering a winning culture was evident throughout the season, as Kentucky soared through the tournament bracket with heart and discipline.
Pope becomes the first Kentucky coach since John Calipari in 2015 to receive the NABC honor, further cementing his legacy just one year into his tenure.
University of Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart praised Pope’s impact, stating, “Mark has brought an energy and a vision to this program that resonates at every level. He embodies everything this university stands for.”
As the Wildcats look ahead to the 2025 season, expectations are sky-high, but with Pope at the helm, the future of Kentucky basketball has never looked brighter.
