Despite their efforts, Carter had sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Aspen Valley Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;James was an exceptional athlete and an even better person,&#8221; said Coach Tara Mitchell. &#8220;This is an unimaginable loss for our team and the entire university community.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>An investigation is underway, but officials believe speed and difficult trail conditions may have contributed to the accident.
